Overview of Banghuris Homestay

The study focusing on the collection of data in order to complete the research on Social and Economic Impact on Homestay Tourism in Banghuris Sepang, Selangor. The Banghuris Homestay village, located in the Sepang district of Selangor, 60km from Kuala Lumpur or 35km from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The area comprised of three villages: Kampung Bukit Bangkung, Ulu Chuchuh and Ulu Teris with total number of homestay participants are 50. 15 and 10 house each village.

Within these communities, a total of seventy five families are able to accommodate up to three hundred people at any given time. Although the predominant language within each village is Malay, the younger generations are bilingual and able to translate, when necessary, for the elders in the village. Traditionally, these villages survived on a subsistence lifestyle; however after opening their homes to the world, they began to revolutionize their economy while still maintaining their basic way of life.

According to the operator of Banghuris Homestay as president of Selangor Homestay Association, Haji Basir the homestay development begins when the Ulu Chuchuh villages awarded as ‘Kampung Terbaik Peringkat Selangor’ in 1993. This recognition leads to increasing visitor arrival to the villages for have a look the village environment and beauty scenery. From top of that, they come out with ‘Program Pelancongan Desa’ in 1996 which give income to the local people. At that stage, 18 houses participated with the program after project and proposal presentation approve by the ministry. When the program developing, it attracted Bukit Bangkung and Ulu Teris villages to join with Ulu Chuchuh in 2003 and become as Banghuris Homestay.

For a minimal cost of RM60.00 per day, the program provides travelers from around the world with comfy accommodation, tasty cuisine and the opportunity to integrate into the daily workings of a Malay village. The Banghuris Homestay Program has also set aside 13 acres of agricultural space for a fruit orchard. With a population of over 3,000 Banghuris folks will definitely fascinate visitors with their way of life, culture and their tradition.

Based on record, highest total number of foreign tourist were from Japan (4519) followed by Indonesia (150) and Singapore (147). Meanwhile total number of domestic tourist is 1849 with total revenue RM 118,235 compared to foreign tourist total revenue is RM 306,360. (Banghuris Homestay Annual Report, 2008)

The Banghuris Homestay also offers a host of agro tourism activities. Visitors will be taken for an educational tour to the coconut, star fruit, guava and palm oil plantations. A visit to the orchid and hydroponics vegetable farms is also being lined-up for visitors. The sudden interest in the village in 1993 brought about positive response from the village leadership, comprising the village headman, village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and the Women Advancement Group or well known as ‘Kumpulan Pembangunan Wanita’ or KPW which was established by the Selangor Agriculture Department.
